I havent figured out the commit yet.
It looks like the regression was introduced by Bernd Schmidt's patch to improve zero-/sign-extensions (PR 42172), which we did indeed backport to Linaro GCC 4.5. (I've updated the PR 46883 bugzilla with more details.)
Should you need a bug in linaro bug tracker I will be happy to file one

same for the Ubuntu side. If you see this in one of the gcc-4.x packages in Ubuntu, please open a task for the corresponding package in Ubuntu.
